3 Immediate Steps After Finding Mold
Whether it is your first new home, a cabin that you haven’t been to for a while, or in a rental property it is important to remember that mold is a common issue that it is often an easy fix. To help a remediation company get the job done faster, here are the first steps you can take after finding mold in your home:
1. Find All the Mold
Do your best to check around the affected areas in different rooms, floors, and potentially even outside to locate the extent of the region affected by the mold.
2. Find the Moisture Source
Once you have found the limit of the damage caused by the mold, try and identify the source of the moisture that is most likely to be sustaining the growth of the mold in your home. If you are unable to find the source of the moisture, then you can move on to the next step.
3. Call For Help Immediately

What To Do After Identifying Mold Damage
What To Do:
- Limit your exposure to mold by wearing masks, gloves, and goggles without ventilation holes.
- Prevent future mold by completely removing moisture sources and destroying root systems, which often starts with professional water damage restoration to address leaks, flooding, or hidden moisture.
- Reduce overall humidity levels in the house with a dehumidifier to keep mold from growing back.
- Dispose of any rags used during cleaning in a sealed garbage bag.
- Immediately wash your clothes in a separate laundry load with hot water.
What Not To Do:
- DO NOT try and clean mold without protective equipment as mold can contain serious allergens and you can spread spores further throughout the house.
- DO NOT repaint walls until after mold has been completely removed and the wall has dried. Otherwise, it is likely to peel.
- DO NOT scrape mold off of surfaces as it will make identifying the extent of root systems difficult.
