3 Immediate Steps In Case of A Fire
The most important thing to do in case of a fire is to make sure you are safe. If you lose control of a fire inside or outside your home, your next steps could very much be the difference between life and death. So, to get help on the way, follow these three steps:
1. Stop, Drop, & Roll
If your clothing catches fire, stop immediately. Drop to the ground and roll over and over to smother the flames. Keep rolling until the fire is fully out. Once the flames are extinguished, stay low and move away from the source of the fire to avoid further injury.
2. Escape the Danger
When escaping a fire, remember that smoke and heat rise. Stay low and crawl on your hands and knees to avoid toxic fumes. Check doors for heat before opening them, and keep your head down when exiting. Use stairs instead of elevators and move quickly to safety.
3. Call For Help
Once you are safely outside and away from the fire, call 911 immediately. Share your location and any details you can about the situation. If you’re unsure of the exact address, provide landmarks or descriptions. Stay on the line until help arrives and follow instructions carefully.

What To Do After Fire Damage
What To Do:
- Call Taylored Restoration, and we’ll walk you through what to do next.
- If renting, immediately call your landlord.
- Call your insurance company to report a claim and check your policy. Taylored Restoration can advocate on your behalf and support you in interactions with insurance companies.
- Open some windows to ventilate the property, but consider weather conditions like rain or freezing temperatures, as moisture intrusion may require water damage restoration to prevent additional damage.
- Discard any food in places where you found soot or that was exposed to heat from the fire.
- Completely empty your freezer and refrigerator. If electricity has been off for any amount of time, prepare for water using a rolled-up towel.
What Not To Do:
DO NOT try and clean ash and soot off yourself. They contain chemicals that can be dangerous to your health and should be carefully removed by a professional.
DO NOT use affected electronics including TVs, radios/stereos, etc. until checked and cleaned.
DO NOT use affected upholstered furniture, if possible.
DO NOT clean affected clothing with ordinary cleaning products or dry-cleaning.
DO NOT consume exposed food, including canned food, which has been affected by excessive heat.
