How to Prevent Mold During Alaskan Winters

Between the rain and snow, winter in Alaska is a very wet season. While this can be fun for numerous winter activities, it can also be a time when problems like mold start to occur. We’ve put together some great tips to prevent mold from growing in your home this winter.

1. Keep the floor dry and clean. With wet weather comes wet shoes and clothing. Be sure to keep these wet items in a designated area, like a mud room, where they are able to dry out.

2. Increase air circulation. When air circulates it allows for damp areas to dry out. Simply using fans and opening windows for a few minutes every day can make a big difference.

3. Look for leaks. Leaks typically occur around windows, door framing, and pipes. If you notice any leaks, it’s important to get them fixed immediately to ensure they don’t turn into a bigger problem.

4. Limit clutter. Clutter can retain moisture and become a breeding ground for mold and mildew. Limiting clutter is important in keeping your home clean and mold-free.

5. Run exhaust fans. Whenever you’re using your bathroom or kitchen, it’s important to have the exhaust fans running in order to dry out any moisture that may be present in the air. This will eliminate the damp environment mold needs to grow.
