4 Signs Your May Have Bathroom Water Damage

When it comes to water damage, it is no surprise that bathrooms are often the most vulnerable room in the house. Even a small crack in the floor or wall can cause water to enter and cause damage to the underlying materials and structure. As a homeowner, it’s important to be able to identify water damage in your bathroom before it becomes a bigger problem. Here’s what to look out for.

1. Your floors feel soft. If your bathroom floors feel spongy and soft, it’s a significant sign that there’s water damage below them. When wood is subjected to water and starts to rot, they start to feel soft to the touch. The rot will eventually cause your floors to collapse.

2. Your walls look and feel warped. When water penetrates the area behind your walls, it will cause your walls to swell and warp. Similar to your floors, your walls can become soft to the touch. Paint can also start to bubble and plaster can start to crumble.

3. Mold won’t go away. If you have mold that keeps returning to the same spot despite constant cleaning, it’s likely there is a leak somewhere. Water can pool behind walls and cause mold growth inside your walls, which eventually makes its way to the outside of the wall. Since the leak is internal, it’s impossible to completely get rid of the mold without addressing the underlying problem.

4. Gaps in the grout. Large gaps in between tiles or cracks in grout can allow water to leak into flooring or walls. It’s important to seal these areas right away to ensure no leaks or further damage occurs.
