Fall Home Renovation Projects to Tackle This Weekend
Now that fall is here and winter is on the way, it’s a good idea to start taking steps to prepare your home for colder weather. There are several different projects you can do on the weekends to improve the overall functionality of your home during the colder seasons.
1. Find and seal leaks. Air leakage is one of the biggest causes of energy waste. Search your home’s windows and doors for potential air leaks. Once found, you can use specialty caulks and sealants to stop the leaks which will result in increased energy efficiency.
2. Install an air purifier. During the winter we spend a significant amount of time inside and rarely open the windows. As a result, old air is repeatedly recirculated back into your home. Air purifiers are a great way to remove any toxins that could potentially be circulating around your house. You can opt to install a whole house air purifier, or purchase a portable version.
3. Add a smart thermostat. Smart thermostats are one of the most popular items in home technology for a good reason. They allow you to control your home’s temperature and make adjustments from your phone. You can set your thermostat on a timer for increased energy savings, and make adjustments when you’re not home.
4. Prepare for storms. If you aren’t prepared for a winter storm, it’s a great time to make sure your home is ready. Take a look at the trees in your yard and remove any dangerous branches or dead trees that could potentially fall into your house. You may want to consider installing a generator in your home in the event you lose power.
