6 Ways to Protect Your Home While on Vacation

Spring and Summer are some of the busiest times of the year for vacationers. Whether you are planning on going abroad or traveling domestically, it’s important to make sure your home is safe and secure from potential intruders and other problems while you’re on your trip. We’ve compiled a few ideas to make sure your home is secure.

Install Security Lights. If you don’t already have them, outdoor security lights are a great option to make your home safer. We suggest installing them on the sides of your home, and in areas that could potentially be a target for break-ins, like your back door. Motion activated lights are also a great option known to deter intruders.

Turn off the Water Main. To avoid coming home to a flooded house, turn off the water main before you leave for your trip. If you plan on running your sprinklers while you are gone, at least consider turning off the water supply to major appliances like your toilets, dishwasher, washing machine, and sinks.

Hire Someone to Cut Your Grass. If it is a friend or a lawn care service, make sure your lawn is tended to while you are away. An overgrown lawn is a sign that the house is not occupied, and could attract potential intruders.

Clear Your Gutters. It’s a good idea to clean your gutters before your trip, especially if a storm or inclement weather is expected while you’re gone. A combination of clogged gutters and rain could lead to gutter overflow and basement flooding.

Install a Security Camera. Before you leave, it’s a good idea to install security cameras inside and outside your home. Many modern home camera systems will stream a video feed directly to your phone, allowing you to keep an eye on your house while you are away. The appearance of cameras could also help deter potential intruders from entering your home.

Have a Friend Check-In. While you are on vacation, have a friend stop by periodically and check on your house. They should keep an eye out for any leaks, hazards, or anything that may look off. While at your home, they can also check your mail and readjust blinds so your home looks occupied.

These tips should keep your home safer from intruders, potential flooding, and make your trip a little more stress-free. Enjoy your vacation!
