2017 Roofing Trends
Do you need a new roof? Deciding on what type of roofing material you want to install can be difficult. There are a few options to consider, all with different pros and cons. If you’re thinking about replacing your roof in the near future, here is a list of current trends in the roofing market to consider.
Asphalt Shingles. The classic asphalt tile is still the most popular option for roofing. They’re budget-friendly, lightweight, and the installation is quick and easy. The downside to asphalt shingles is that the lifespan is only 7-15 years, causing some homeowners to look at other long-term roofing options.
Slate Tiles. Slate tiles are growing in popularity due to their sleek appearance and durability. They are relatively affordable and last about 20-25 years - significantly longer than asphalt. The negative aspect of tile roofing is that they are heavier than traditional asphalt shingles. Some homes may not be structurally sound to support the weight of them.
Green Roofs. As the green trend takes off, green roofs - also known as “living roofs” - are becoming more common. Grass, greenery, and other vegetation grows on top of these eco-friendly roofs. They are already very common in Europe. Many US cities like Portland, Chicago, and Washington D.C. are offering residents incentives to install green roofs over the traditional variety.
Solar Panels. Even though it’s not technically a roofing trend, more and more people are opting to add solar panels to their roofs. While the initial installation cost can be intimidating, state and federal loans are available for those thinking about installing solar panels. Currently over a million Americans are using solar energy, and that amount is supposed to double over the next year.
